Number One Icelander: President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson Lines Up for Morning Coffee and Irresistible Icelandic Bakery
After working and travelling in many established and young democracies we were pleasantly surprised by Europe’s oldest democracy habits: President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was in line for his Sunday morning coffee on August 18, 2013 in the charming café in Borgarnes, Iceland. The only two high ranking distinctions were that the car in which he arrived has license plate with # 1 on it and Icelandic flag in the front of the car.
Mr. President did wait in line and did get a bag full of fresh homemade goodies; we were just left wondering which ones… Iceland does offer a wide range of wonderful and absolutely irresistible cakes, pastries, buns and cookies, so for us as tourists it was confirmation that there are no special bakeries for the # 1 Person in the country, that everyone eats the same great Icelandic cinnamon buns, cookies, twisted doughnuts or cakes. Hagkaup Kaffihus in Borgarnes is part of the supermarket chain Hagkaup and in addition to great buns and cookies can keep you inside for hours with the breathtaking view of the mountains and ocean.
